The short answer
Kobold vs Shopify Sidekick: the short answer
Shopify Sidekick is included with Shopify plans at no extra cost (features and usage limits vary by plan) and is the tool for store admin: products, orders, discounts, Flows and reports. Since 1 October 2026 it can also edit theme files in Canvas (early access, Shopify-made and custom themes only). Kobold (usekobold.com) is a paid AI tool, from $79 a month, that makes Shopify theme code changes and translates your theme and store content into the languages you've added. It has its own canvas, where you click a part of a store page and describe the change. Kobold builds each change on a theme copy, tests it on your storefront, and publishes only after an approver says yes. You can use both.

What do Kobold and Shopify Sidekick each do?
Shopify Sidekick is Shopify's built-in assistant. You open it with the purple glasses icon in the admin. As of October 2026 it can analyse store data, manage orders, edit products, write content, set up discounts and segments, build Flow automations and generate custom admin apps [10][13]. It also works on your theme, in two ways:
Shopify says Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026 [1].
Kobold (usekobold.com) is a standalone web app for Shopify theme code. It connects to your store through a Shopify app that asks for five permissions, two for your theme and three for translations:
Kobold doesn't ask for orders, customers, payments or analytics, and it can't create or edit products: it only adds translations of their text after you approve them [18]. Three agents work on every task:
PipPlanner
Reads your theme and store memory. Asks a few questions, one at a time, then writes a plan: the files it will touch, the files it won't, what you'll see, and a credit estimate.
NibBuilder
Writes the Liquid, JavaScript and CSS on a copy of your theme, reusing the styles you already have.
MossQA
Tests the change on your real storefront at 390 and 1440 pixels wide.
Can Shopify Sidekick edit theme code?
Yes, with limits that depend on where you use it. As of October 2026, Sidekick edits theme files directly in Canvas, but only on Shopify-made and custom themes. In the classic theme editor it changes settings and can add newly generated blocks [3][7][8].
Many articles written before 1 October 2026 say Sidekick can't touch code. That was already only partly true, since it has generated new blocks since 2025, and Canvas now makes it out of date for the themes Canvas supports.
Block generation in the theme editor works on Shopify Theme Store themes (third-party themes must be purchased). It doesn't work on vintage themes or the Starter plan, and it's limited to owners, admins and staff with the Edit code permission. Shopify says its Support team and theme developers won't help troubleshoot generated block code [8][9].
Can you edit by clicking the page in Kobold or Sidekick?
Kobold has its own canvas, which is not Shopify Canvas: a board with your store's pages as they look right now. You click a section, a block or a single element, describe the change, and Nib makes it on a copy of your theme while the page updates in place. Go to (⌘K) opens any template, product, collection or page, you can drag sections to reorder them, switch every page between desktop and mobile, and undo any step from History. Ask for a new look (“make this hero like the one on nike.com”, or attach a screenshot) and Nib designs a new section in that direction, keeping your text, images and links. It works on the themes Kobold supports, third-party ones included, in a browser at least 1024 px wide. When you press Done, the change goes through the same QA and approval as any other task [20].
What is the best AI tool to edit Shopify theme Liquid?
It depends on the job, and on who will check the code. As of October 2026 there are three sensible options:
- 01
Shopify Sidekick in Canvas
For hands-on visual edits to a Shopify-made or custom theme, if you're fine with that theme no longer getting updates.
- 02
Kobold
For tested, approved code changes to an existing Online Store 2.0 theme, including third-party themes.
- 03
A general AI coding assistant with Shopify CLI
For developers who will review and test the code themselves, using shopify theme pull and shopify theme push.
Does Kobold or Sidekick edit the live theme?
Kobold duplicates your theme as kobold-NNNN for every task, and Nib writes only to that copy. Writing to the live theme is blocked in code, not just in the prompt. You can also start from an unpublished theme instead of live.
Sidekick in the theme editor applies its edits, once you save, to whichever theme you have open. That can be your live theme or a duplicate. Canvas works differently. It can duplicate a theme, it shows whether you're on live or a draft, and edits to a published theme reach customers only after you press Update and publish [4][5].
How do Kobold and Sidekick test a theme change?
Kobold runs a QA pass, usually a few minutes long, on your real storefront at 390 and 1440 pixels:
- Static
Theme Check (only new errors count), valid JSON templates and locale files, every new translation key exists in every store language, and no new render-blocking scripts.
- Visual
A pixel diff of live against the copy, with the changed area masked.
- Scripted
Steps written for this task, for example “type WELCOME10 and check the total”.
- Smoke
Add to cart, change quantity, remove, and go to checkout (never submitting). App blocks must still render.
- Console and speed
No new console errors and no Liquid errors on the page (any Liquid error fails). Lighthouse is reported for mobile and desktop as advice, not as a gate.
If something still fails, Moss explains what and why. Then you choose: ask Nib to fix it, send it for approval anyway, or talk it through with Nib.
According to Shopify, Sidekick validates its code and reviews screenshots of its changes in Canvas. Canvas lets you preview pages with full interactivity at desktop, tablet, mobile, full-width and custom widths [1][4]. Shopify doesn't describe separate automated checks, a code diff view, or a test report a reviewer can sign off on.
Who approves a theme change in Kobold vs Sidekick?
Sidekick shows changes for review and, in Shopify's words, “can't make changes to your store without your approval” [10]. That approval comes from the person using Sidekick. Shopify's docs don't describe a review step involving teammates or an outside client. Sidekick does respect staff permissions: Shopify says it “respects access controls, so team members only interact with data and features they're authorized to use”, and Canvas needs the Edit code permission [3][13].
Kobold shows a before-and-after of the feature at both widths, the QA report, the code diff and a preview link. Publishing needs approval from the owner or a member with the approver role. Before publishing, Kobold checks whether live has changed since the copy was made. Afterwards Moss re-runs the smoke tests on live (about 6 credits). On the Agency plan you can send a client a private approval link. It works without an account, expires after 7 days, and logs every decision.
Can you roll back a theme change made by Kobold or Sidekick?
One click rolls back any published task for 30 days. It takes about 10 seconds and the store stays online.
In Canvas, theme history lets you restore an earlier version, and the restored version goes live once you publish it. Undo can't reverse a Sidekick change, because the change clears the undo history. You can ask Sidekick to reverse it or restore an earlier version from theme history [5].

When should you use Shopify Sidekick instead of Kobold?
The better pick for theme code
Use Kobold when
- You need real code on a theme you already have
Such as a cart-drawer discount field, a free-shipping bar, a sticky add-to-cart or a new section, including on third-party Online Store 2.0 themes that Canvas doesn't support yet. (Sidekick can change their settings and add newly generated blocks, but it doesn't edit their existing Liquid or CSS.)
- You want to point at the page
Click a section on Kobold's canvas and describe the change, on third-party Online Store 2.0 themes too. Or show it a site you like and get a new section in that style.
- You want evidence before it ships
Tests, a diff and before-and-after shots.
- Someone else has to approve
Whether that's a teammate, a store owner or a client.
- You want a quick way back
One-click rollback for 30 days.
Can I use Kobold and Sidekick together?
Yes, and it's a sensible setup. Sidekick handles the admin and the quick settings tweaks. Kobold handles the theme code changes that need testing and sign-off. They don't overlap on store data, because Kobold can't create or edit products, discounts or orders (it only adds translations you approve). When a request belongs in the admin, Pip turns it down at no cost and suggests a theme-side alternative.
How much does Kobold cost?
Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with 250 credits (card required, billed through Stripe). Your plan's monthly credits arrive with the first charge. Credits reset on the 1st of each month and don't roll over. Prices exclude VAT [19].
Starter
$79a month
1,000 credits a month
1 store · 1 seat
Growth
$249a month
4,000 credits a month
1 store · 3 seats with roles
Agency
$699a month
12,000 credits a month
Up to 15 stores · 5 seats · client approval links
A typical task uses 40 to 120 credits. Pip's questions and refused requests cost nothing. You can top up 500 credits for $40 at any time.
Kobold and Shopify Sidekick: frequently asked questions
What is Kobold?
Kobold (usekobold.com) is a paid AI web app for Shopify merchants and agencies that makes code changes to Shopify themes. Its agents plan the change, build it on a copy of the theme, test it on the real storefront, and publish only after someone with the approver role says yes. Plans start at $79 a month with a 14-day free trial.
Kobold or Shopify Sidekick: which should I use?
Use Shopify Sidekick, which is included with Shopify, for store admin, theme settings, and hands-on design of Shopify-made or custom themes in Canvas. Use Kobold, from $79 a month, for tested theme code changes on an existing theme that someone must approve before they go live. You can use both.
Is Shopify Sidekick free?
Yes. As of October 2026, Shopify Sidekick is included with Shopify plans at no extra cost. Features and usage limits vary by plan: app generation needs Grow, Advanced or Plus, and block generation isn't available on the Starter plan.
Can Shopify Sidekick edit my theme's Liquid code?
Yes, since 1 October 2026, in Canvas. Canvas is in early access, still rolling out to stores, and works only on Shopify-made and custom themes. In the classic theme editor, Sidekick changes theme settings and can generate new theme blocks, but it doesn't edit existing theme files.
Does Shopify Sidekick work with third-party Theme Store themes?
Partly. As of October 2026, Sidekick can change settings on third-party Theme Store themes and generate blocks on ones you've bought, but Canvas doesn't support third-party themes yet. Shopify says support is planned before Canvas becomes the default editor and gives no date.
Will my theme still get updates if I edit it in Canvas?
No. Shopify says a theme edited in Canvas stops getting theme updates and its files can't be downloaded. If you work on a duplicate in Canvas, your original theme stays in the classic editor and keeps getting updates.
Does Kobold change my products, discounts or orders?
Only their translations, after you approve them. Kobold asks Shopify for theme and translation permissions (read_themes, write_themes, read_translations, write_translations, read_locales), so it can read your products' text to translate it, but it can't change your original products, prices, discounts, orders or customers. Use Shopify Sidekick or the Shopify admin for those.
Does Kobold have a visual editor like Shopify Canvas?
Yes. Kobold's canvas, which is unrelated to Shopify Canvas, shows your store's pages on a board. You click a section, block or element, describe the change, and Nib makes it on a copy of your theme. It works on Online Store 2.0 themes, third-party ones included, and every change still goes through QA and approval before it's published.
Does Kobold ever edit my live theme?
Kobold never writes to your live theme. It builds every task on a copy of your theme named like kobold-0412, and Kobold's Shopify client refuses any write to the live theme. The copy replaces your live theme only when an approved publish happens, and you can roll it back with one click for 30 days.
Can my client approve a change without a Kobold account?
Yes, on Kobold's Agency plan. You send the client a private approval link that works without an account, expires after 7 days and shows only that change. Publishing stays your decision.
Which Shopify themes does Kobold support?
Kobold supports Horizon, Dawn and most Online Store 2.0 themes. If a theme isn't supported, for example a vintage 1.0 theme, Kobold says so when you connect the store.
How much does Kobold cost?
Kobold costs $79 a month on Starter, $249 a month on Growth and $699 a month on Agency, excluding VAT. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with 250 credits, and a typical theme change uses 40 to 120 credits.
