The short answer
Kobold vs Shopify Translate & Adapt: the short answer
Shopify Translate & Adapt is free and made by Shopify. It auto-translates up to 2 languages in most countries and up to 8 in 12 European countries, lets you translate any language by hand, and lets you adapt content per market. It has no documented glossary, brand voice or approval step. Kobold (usekobold.com) is a paid tool, from $79 a month, that translates your theme and store content into every language you've added in Shopify. It follows your glossary and brand voice, shows you a sample and a review table first, and blocks drafts that change links, numbers or code. Auto-translate, turned on per language, then keeps store and theme content up to date and either applies each change or holds it for your review. Both write native Shopify translations, so you can use them together.

What do Kobold and Shopify Translate & Adapt each do?
Translate & Adapt is Shopify's own translation app. It launched in 2022 [6], installs itself when you add a language to your store [5], and is free [1]. On the Shopify App Store it has 4.4 out of 5 stars from 1,409 reviews [1]. It does three jobs:
- Adapt per market
Different text, images, videos or logos for a market in the same language, such as “Sweaters” in one market and “Jumpers” in another [3].
Translations are stored natively in Shopify, stay there if you uninstall the app, and show up in other apps that use Shopify's Translations API [4].
Kobold (usekobold.com) is a standalone web app for Shopify theme changes and translations. It translates into the languages you've already added in Shopify, published or not, in four areas: theme text (buttons, labels, cart text), theme content (text you typed into sections and theme settings), store content (products, collections, pages, blog posts, menus and image alt text) and the metafield and metaobject fields you choose [20]. It writes native Shopify translations too, so they stay if you cancel Kobold [20][22]. It connects through a Shopify app with nine permissions:
The last four are read-only: they tell Kobold when your content changes, for auto-translate, and let it list your metafields and metaobjects so you can choose which to translate. With these permissions Kobold can't create or edit your products, pages or other store content. For translations it only adds translations next to the original [22].
How many languages can Translate & Adapt translate automatically?
It depends on your store's country. The App Store listing says “up to 2 languages” [1], and Shopify's help page adds an exception for 12 European countries [2]:
The listing states the limit, but one merchant's App Store review from August 2026 says it “is not mentioned anywhere, only when you reach the limit” [1].
Do translations keep up when you change your store?
In most countries, no. Shopify's words: “After you add or change content, such as a new product, return to the app and click Auto-translate again for each language.” In the 12 European countries, Auto-sync can do it for you. It runs once a week, is off by default, and is turned on per language, so the first sync can be up to a week away [2]. Re-running automatic translation updates machine translations that are out of date and never changes translations you added or edited by hand. For some theme content, such as your theme's default text, it only adds missing translations [2].
Kobold's auto-translate keeps a language up to date as you change the store. It's off by default and set per language by an owner, once you've translated that language yourself at least once [20].
- When it runs
30 minutes after a change (later changes join the same batch) or once a day at 03:00 in your store's timezone [20].
- Apply automatically or hold for review
Apply adds each translation once it passes Kobold's checks. Hold keeps the drafts on the Translations page until someone approves them, for up to 14 days [20].
- What it covers
Store content and theme content. Theme text (buttons and labels) is translated when you press Translate missing, never automatically [20].
- Big changes wait
A batch of more than 20,000 words across its languages, after an import for example, is always held for review, and owners are emailed [20].
- Limits and undo
An optional monthly credit limit per store, and Undo for 30 days on everything it added [20].
Does Translate & Adapt translate values that aren't copy?
Sometimes, according to merchants and app makers. Merchants report Translate & Adapt translating values that aren't copy: app metafields, which one merchant says stopped Judge.me reviews working in the translated languages [12] (Judge.me's help center describes the same problem [18]), metafields holding code or identifiers (in 2023) [14], link URLs inside page text, which led to 404 errors [15], and a CSS colour value (background-color: red became 赤, in 2023) [11]. Others say they have no control over which fields it translates [13], that it still translated text they had tagged not to translate [17], or that it translated product names they wanted kept, with no exemption list [16].
In February 2023 a Shopify staff member wrote that there was “no way to tell the auto-translation to skip a specific field” and suggested correcting values afterwards through a CSV export [7]. In August 2025, replying to a developer who asked for control over which fields are translatable, a Shopify staff member wrote: “There isn't a way to do this granularly right now” [8]. Shopify's own guide to translating a theme says to never translate Liquid, HTML tags or the destination of a link [10]. Part of the reason is the platform: Shopify marks metafield types such as JSON, URL and single-line text as translatable [9]. One theme maker's docs warn that translation apps, which it says normally auto-translate theme settings, can translate the option names its variant swatches match on, which breaks the swatches. It names Translate & Adapt as one such app [19].
Kobold decides what is copy before anything is translated, and checks every draft after [20][23]:
- Never translated
Metafields you haven't chosen, URL, file, number and reference fields, tags, checkout and email notifications, and payment and delivery names. URL handles only when you ask, and shop policies only when you ask and approve each one.
- Theme settings
Settings the theme matches on are never translated: swatch and option names, colour names, links and style settings.
- Code hidden
Script, style, iframe and SVG blocks are hidden from the translator and must come back byte for byte.
- Blocking checks
A draft can't go live if it changes a placeholder, link, email, phone number or HTML, adds a number, misses a plural form, breaks your glossary or comes back empty.
Metafields and metaobjects are opt-in, field by field. Kobold lists the fields defined in your store, and you tick the ones that hold copy, like care instructions or FAQ answers. App fields start off and are never suggested, so an app's data stays as it is unless you choose it. In a JSON field only the text values are translated, and keys, numbers, links, IDs and colours stay as they are, with the structure unchanged [20].
Kobold's checks have limits too. They catch changed links, numbers, code and markup, not meaning: a plain word in a text field that a script matches on can still be translated. A text field you tick is translated as text, so if it holds an ID or a colour name, that can be drafted too, and which JSON values count as text is decided by rules, not by reading your theme; in a translation you start, you see it in the review before it goes live. In Apply automatically, no person reads a draft before it goes live, and Kobold's check of how text fits on the page runs only on translations you start yourself [20].
Can you control the wording and review translations first?
Translate & Adapt's help pages and App Store listing don't mention a glossary, do-not-translate terms or brand-voice settings [1][2]. They don't describe an approval step either. Shopify advises: “Before you publish translations to your storefront, review them for accuracy.” You can translate a language before you publish it, then check it in the side-by-side editor, one resource at a time [2][3].
- Glossary
Names Kobold keeps as is (“Oak & Ember”) and words it always translates one way (“cutting board” → “Schneidebrett”). A draft that breaks it can't be approved until it's fixed, and auto-translate follows it too [20].
- Brand voice
Kobold drafts in your store's voice, from your store memory and translations you approved [20].
- Sample of 10
Before translating everything, Kobold translates 10 strings per language. You approve, edit or reject each one, and your choices guide the rest [20].
- Review table
Every string with its original, the current translation and Kobold's draft. Filter, search, edit, approve or reject one by one or all at once [20].
- Theme copy first
In a translation you start, theme text and theme content go on a copy of your theme, so you can preview each language before anything goes live. Auto-translate writes theme content to your live theme, after saving what was there [20].
Can you adapt content per market?
Yes, and this is something Kobold doesn't do. In Translate & Adapt you can change text, images, videos and logos for one market, add market promotions, or set fixed money values through metafields. You can only adapt content in languages added to that market, and URL handles can't be changed per market [3][4].
Can you use Kobold and Translate & Adapt together?
Yes. Both write native Shopify translations, so each sees the other's work [4][20]. Kobold only fills translations that are missing or that Shopify marks as out of date. Translations made by you or by Translate & Adapt count as existing, and Kobold replaces them only when you ask [20]. A common setup: keep Translate & Adapt for adapting markets and for hand edits, and let Kobold translate and keep languages up to date.
Two cautions from Kobold's docs. If both auto-translate the same language, both would translate the same text, so turn one of them off for that language. And while a Kobold translation task waits for approval, don't edit theme translations in Shopify or Translate & Adapt: publishing Kobold's theme copy would replace them (Apply to live theme skips them) [20].

What does translation cost with Kobold vs Translate & Adapt?
Translate & Adapt costs nothing [1]. Kobold charges 12 credits per 1,000 words of your store's original text, per language [21]. Here is what that comes to for three store sizes.
Assumptions: 12 credits per 1,000 words per language; 8% of the words change each month; year 1 is the first full translation plus 11 months of changes; year 2 is 12 months of changes; dollars at $0.058 to $0.08 per credit (the Agency plan's rate to the top-up price), rounded.

| Store and languages | Shopify Translate & Adapt | Kobold plan for the first run | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30,000 words · 1 language | Year 1: 677 credits ($39–$54). Year 2: 346 credits ($20–$28) | $0. Click Auto-translate after changes, or weekly Auto-sync in 12 European countries | 360 credits: fits Starter's 1,000 a month |
| 30,000 words · 3 languages | Year 1: 2,030 credits ($118–$162). Year 2: 1,037 credits ($60–$83) | $0 for 2 languages. The third by hand or with another app, except in 12 European countries | 1,080 credits: Starter plus a top-up, or Growth |
| 70,000 words · 1 language | Year 1: 1,579 credits ($92–$126). Year 2: 806 credits ($47–$65) | $0. Click Auto-translate after changes, or weekly Auto-sync in 12 European countries | 840 credits: fits Starter |
| 70,000 words · 3 languages | Year 1: 4,738 credits ($275–$379). Year 2: 2,419 credits ($140–$194) | $0 for 2 languages. The third by hand or with another app, except in 12 European countries | 2,520 credits: Growth, or Starter plus top-ups |
| 200,000 words · 1 language | Year 1: 4,512 credits ($262–$361). Year 2: 2,304 credits ($134–$184) | $0. Click Auto-translate after changes, or weekly Auto-sync in 12 European countries | 2,400 credits: Growth |
| 200,000 words · 3 languages | Year 1: 13,536 credits ($785–$1,083). Year 2: 6,912 credits ($401–$553) | $0 for 2 languages. The third by hand or with another app, except in 12 European countries | 7,200 credits: Agency, or Growth plus top-ups |
The dollar range is the value of the credits used, not an extra bill. Kobold credits come from your plan's monthly pool, which you share with theme work, and Kobold itself costs at least $79 a month ($948 a year on Starter). With Translate & Adapt the cost is your time: the clicks after each change, and hand translation past its language limit [1][2]. In Kobold, a batch of changes over 20,000 words across its languages, after an import for example, waits for your review even in Apply automatically. The first full translation is one you start, so it also includes Kobold's check of how the text fits on the page, charged like other QA and not counted in this table [20].
When should you use Translate & Adapt instead of Kobold?
The better pick for control
Use Kobold when
- You sell in more languages
Every language you've added. Auto-translate keeps store and theme content up to date 30 minutes after a change or once a day.
- Wording has to stay on brand
A glossary that blocks drafts that break it, and your brand voice.
- Someone checks before it goes live
A sample of 10, a review table, or auto-translate held for review.
- Apps and theme settings must keep working
Kobold translates only the metafields you choose, never the theme settings your theme matches on, and blocks drafts that change links, numbers or code.
- You want a way back
Undo any translation run for 30 days.
How much does Kobold cost?
Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with 250 credits (card required, billed through Stripe). Your plan's monthly credits arrive with the first charge. Credits reset on the 1st of each month and don't roll over. Prices exclude VAT [21].

Kobold and Shopify Translate & Adapt: frequently asked questions
What is Kobold?
Kobold (usekobold.com) is a paid web app for Shopify merchants and agencies. It makes theme code changes and translates theme and store content into the languages you've added in Shopify, with a glossary, your brand voice, a sample and review before a translation you start goes live, and per-language auto-translate. Plans start at $79 a month with a 14-day free trial.
Is Shopify Translate & Adapt free?
Yes. As of October 2026 Translate & Adapt is free and has no paid plan. It auto-translates up to 2 languages in most countries and up to 8 in 12 European countries, and you can translate any language by hand.
Does Translate & Adapt update translations when I change a product?
Not by itself in most countries: you click Auto-translate again for each language. Stores in 12 European countries can turn on Auto-sync, which runs once a week per language and is off by default.
Does Translate & Adapt have a glossary?
Not that Shopify documents. As of October 2026, its help pages and App Store listing mention no glossary, do-not-translate list or brand-voice settings.
Can Translate & Adapt skip a field, like an app's metafield?
Shopify staff said in February 2023 that auto-translation couldn't skip a specific field, and in August 2025 that there isn't a granular way to choose which fields are translatable. Judge.me's help center tells merchants to remove the translations of its metafields by hand in Translate & Adapt.
Does Kobold translate metafields?
Yes, the ones you choose. On Kobold's Metafields tab you turn on Translate metafields and tick the metafield and metaobject fields that hold copy; app fields start off and are never suggested, so app data stays as it is unless you tick it. JSON fields get only their text values translated. Kobold never translates URL, file, number and reference fields, tags, or theme settings your theme matches on, like swatch and option names.
Can I use Kobold and Translate & Adapt together?
Yes. Both write native Shopify translations. Kobold fills only missing and outdated translations and keeps the ones you or Translate & Adapt made. If both auto-translate the same language, turn one off for that language.
Does Kobold adapt content per market?
No. Kobold writes one translation per language. Use Translate & Adapt for market-specific text, images and offers.
Do my translations stay if I cancel Kobold?
Yes. Kobold writes native Shopify translations, and they stay in your store after you cancel or remove Kobold. Undo stops working once Kobold deletes your store's data.
How much does translation cost in Kobold?
12 credits per 1,000 words of your store's original text, per language, from your plan's monthly credits (shared with theme work). Plans are $79, $249 and $699 a month with 1,000, 4,000 and 12,000 credits, and a 500-credit top-up is $40.
